Projects
Connections Crew
Connections Crew met the first day of
school and helped conduct Freshman Orientation at Big Sky. These
upperclassmen visited the freshmen advisories to give advice on
having a successful career at Big Sky.
NCBI Training
On September 27th, a
diverse group of twenty Big Sky students completed Violence
Prevention training at Big Sky led by trainers from the National
Coalition Building Institute. On October 12-14, some of the
students and Big Sky staff who participated in this training will be
attending NCBI’s ‘Train the Trainer’ at the University of Montana.
Following this training, student/staff teams will be developed to
conduct violence prevention/conflict resolution workshops with Big
Sky’s freshman class.
Tutoring
Students who excel in a particular
subject at Big Sky may wish to participate in peer tutoring. We are
definitely looking for math tutors, so if you’d like to help out,
please stop by the Flagship Office.
Senior Project
The Flagship Office is in the process
of advising ten students on their Senior Projects. Scott doesn’t
have any spots left to advise, but if you are struggling with your
project and in need of a brainstorming session, he’d be happy to
help you.
Advisories
This is the first year for student advisory groups at Big Sky.
The purpose for advisories is to connect students to their school,
encourage academic success, and foster positive relationships with
staff members. Scott is working with an advisory group of 23
freshmen this Fall. He is enjoying the opportunity to work
with such a great group of students and hopes to make their
transition into high school a successful one.
The Advisory Groups meet every Wednesday morning
from 9:15-10:00 PM.
Music Recording
Flagship’s portable 8 track studio is
currently on loan to the Big Sky’s heavy metal masters, Helliana.
The group is in the process of recording a full length album with a
fair number of basic tracks already recorded. This is a talented
band and mark my words, the final product will make you nostalgic
for the days Iron Maiden ruled the metal landscape.
Missoula First Night Teen Idol
Teen Idol is one
of First Night’s
biggest attractions, selling out the Wilma Theatre two years in a
row. This competition is exactly like American Idol—pick a song
to
sing and perform it to the best of your ability before judges at
your school’s preliminary round. Big Sky’s prelim round is
tentatively scheduled for December 11th after school in
Big Sky’s auditorium. The top two contestants will advance to the
finals on New Year's Eve, performing at the Wilma in competition
between other high school finalists. Instrumental versions of
songs are available through the Flagship Office, so sign up now and
start practicing.
Flagship TA
Students at Big Sky can sign up with
Scott to help out in the Flagship Office during their study hall
period. He is looking for help delivering notes, making copies and
keeping the Flagship afloat.
Peer Action
The Peer Action Group will begin in
December. This group will feature representatives from Big Sky,
Hellgate and Sentinel who will receive media literacy training
before designing a television ‘counter ad’ directed at their peers
highlighting the negative aspects of teen alcohol abuse.
